Eighty years on, we're still waiting –(or what happens when you leave a problem to fester resulting in ……..Road pricing!!!!! -ed)
READERS may be as fascinated as I was to learn that the city was about to get a bypass back in 1927!
I quote from the Kentish Gazette of Saturday,
February 5,
1927: "The suggested route of the new
Northern By-Pass road between Milton Bridge and Sturry
was outlined ...
the road should run from Milton Bridge to the city boundary, through
the
grounds of St Dunstan's Vicarage to Cemetery Road and then through
Messrs
Mounts orchards.
"The neighbouring authority
would afterwards continue
the road, which would pass under the Whitstable
railway line at the highest
point. It would then go near the top of Sturry Hill and on to Westbere
Butts
... "
I happened to read this while researching hard copies of the Gazette in connection with celebrations for my father's 80th birthday. So, here we are, 80 years on and still no bypass! I have not got time to do why the bypass did not come to fruition, but would love to know if anyone else knows the reason!
